As is the case with many guitarists, I have a GAS problem – Gear Acquisition Syndrome.
This is the mistaken belief that if only we get a certain amp, pedal or guitar – or even that $35-dollar pick – we will miraculously advance our abilities and become the players we strive to be.
This illusion is astonishing in its powers of seduction. Most of the time I don’t even realize it. All the while, my current equipment sits in my room like a jilted lover.
What needs constant reminding is that it is the guitarist and not the guitar. “It’s the singer, not the song, that makes the music roll along,” as Roger Daltrey belts out in the Who’s tune, Join Together.
All the time fantasizing is better spent practicing. Like a lot of things it is a very simple concept to remember.
